Sacrewell Mill

Sacrewell Mill is a 18th century water mill near Peterborough that in 2014-15 underwent a £1.4million restoration, bringing it back to full working order as a farm, mill and bakery, and making it fully accessible to the public. Vertigo was asked to complete the task with displays that interpret the mill’s 280-year and the site’s 2000-year history. We used it as a platform to tell the story of agriculture and the changes that swept British society during the industrial revolution and 20th century. We used personal accounts of real and fictional people to illustrate the narrative. We commissioned specially written text, illustrations, models, interactives, scene sets, audio and AV in order to stimulate all the senses and tell the story in the most memorable way.

“We first met Vertigo as part of the tender process. We were delighted because they visited on more than one occasion, really trying to understand our brief. Vertigo faced many challenges. Mostly because the water mill is grade II listed building. They obviously couldn’t drill into the walls, they had to have free standing panels, all of which needed to be in keeping with an 18th century building. Once we handed over to Vertigo, we were delighted with their robust project management skills, their communication. We knew we could pick the phone up at any time and they’d be there and get back to us straight away whether that be by email or coming and visiting yet again. Since we re-opened we excided our visitor numbers by 100,000 now and we get such fabulous comments in our comment book from 4 year olds up to 84 year olds saying how intereating it is. Obviously the interpretation form part of that. We really enjoyed working with Rhod and John and would be happy to do so again”
